fail

Fail the first …
You receive an invite to a child’s first birthday party. Do you:
a) decline indicating another commitment
b) rsvp OMG THAT’S MY SO’s B-DAY HOW DARE YOU SCHEDULE SOMETHING ELSE FOR THAT DAY AND INVITE US!

Fail the second…
You observe the child’s birthday party is being held at a town hall. Do you:
a) inquire as to why the location
b) assume that there are an unreasonable number of people potentially attending the party and question what the parents were thinking

Fail the third…
You are having a birthday party for your SO. Do you:
a) Consider fail the first when sending your invites (see above) given that you’re offended when someone invites you to an event without checking to see if they have something else going on first
b) Send an invite because nothing could be more important to invitees than your SO’s birthday

I’m posting this because someone chose B, B and B this weekend.

A while back for my birthday, I bought a USB hard drive to back up my FreeBSD server to … one of those Toshiba portable drives … 320GB … rather nice. Anyway, I’ve been fighting with the server to get it to recognize the disk. Concluded Monday that the USB port wasn’t giving it enough power so I swiped a USB/Firewire card out of a computer we were discarding at work. I installed it tonight and lo and behold, it can see the drive. Unfortunately, when I did a newfs on the drive, it brought down the server (wow … I crashed FreeBSD!). I think I’ve had enough of things crashing today (yeah, work sucked this morning).

In other news, I’ve recently heard from a friend I hadn’t gotten an email from in several months, so that made me quite happy. She and her family are doing well. I’ve gotten in touch with some classmates and college friends as well via Facebook. Tonight, Liz and I attended the Dance Theatre banquet, and that was enjoyable. Afterwords I came home and crashed my server and renewed my domain name for 3 more years. Anyway, last night was a late night, so tonight we’re going to try to get into bed at a semi reasonable hour.

Haven’t posted in a while, in part because I haven’t had much worth talking about. Not sure this necessarily qualifies but I wanted to make an observation. I would like to give a kudos to Brett Favre on his retirement. He is choosing to go out on his own terms and on a fairly positive note. I’ve noticed that the vast majority of people who rip on him do so not because of anything he’s done so much as what the media and fans have done. In some ways, it’s not all that different from the Apple-bashers, but I digress.

What I admire most about Brett is not the records he’s set, the amazing passes he’s thrown, or the last-minute drives he’s led. What I admire is the fact that he’s one of the very few professional athletes who clearly shows his enjoyment of the game. When things aren’t going well, it’s not as apparent obviously, but I really believe that he truly enjoyed his job. Yeah, he got paid well for it, but if you can get paid for doing something you enjoy and arguably do very well, why not? How many quarterbacks out there get sacked by Brian Urlacher and get up smiling?

Anyway, that’s all for tonight! :)

p.s. I think I should make a newer userpic ….

this makes me want to re-rip all my CDs to a higher bitrate (e.g. > 160) or different format.

Apparently Someone thought I needed a reminder not to have too much fun in the snow.  I fairly routinely turn around in the next driveway up the road (vacant lot) so I can drive past the mailbox and easily get the mail out.  Tonight I pulled in to turn around and couldn’t get back out.  After much shoveling, I was finally able to get out but I was rather toasty from the experience … and I needed to shovel my own driveway to boot.  At least I didn’t have to call someone to pull me out.  For anybody who is wondering, yes I was driving my 4Runner… and I even had it in 4-low.  After getting out there were 4 nice ice patches where the wheels had been sitting and spinning.

Tired

Today started way too early (5:20). Was hoping to get a decent nap in today but had nappus interruptus after about 1/2 an hour …. and a power nap wasn’t going to cut it today. It’s now 11:15pm. The child has been very frustrating today. If tonight doesn’t go well, I’m probably going to be very groucny (even more so than I am now). Thank God that my work experience has given me a fair amount of patience.

Most of today and yesterday (a day off) was spent producing a DVD of our church Christmas program. Yesterday was editing, today was making DVDs … I had about 50 requests. While writing DVDs I poked at drupal a little bit as a possibility for the church website. Last year I spent Thanksgiving break re-writing the website because I wasn’t happy with any of the CMS packages that were available and I wanted other people to be able to contribute content. Now the site has been online that way a little over a year and I have yet to have another person post something. So much for that effort. So now I’m thinking it may be useful to have a forum, but I don’t want to write a module for one myself.

Work has been hectic. We’re gearing up to start moving off one of our major file servers to a new file system that’s WebDAV-based (Xythos Digital Locker). That will involve moving about 700GB worth of files for at least 7000 people. We’re running into deadline crunch time (needs to be completed by start of Spring term) so I haven’t been following up on the lower priority tasks that are part of the project.

Well, the daughter appears to be sleeping now so I’m going to go try and do the same.

snow!
